How to Keep the Home Fire Burning

Marriage is like a fire, often the result of a burning romance. However, if the spark between two people is ignored, the flames burn out-and unfortunately, divorce becomes a consideration. If a couple feeds the flame, however, their fire will continue to grow and burn brighter.

If your marriage needs reigniting, Valentine's Day serves as the perfect reminder to tend to your relationship. Here are a few bits of kindling to help prevent your romance from fading:

  1. Be appreciative of your partner. Recognize and thank your spouse for doing the things he or she does in everyday life that are beneficial to your marriage-from working to financially support the family to raising children. Don't forget to be grateful for small efforts as well, like simply taking out the trash.
  2. Foster relationships outside of the marriage. The marriage should be the primary and most important relationship, but it doesn't have to be the only one. Make time for other family members and friends. Time away from one's spouse can be beneficial-as the expression goes, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder."
  3. Choose words wisely. During disagreements, never use "always" and "never," as these words inflame arguments. Avoid declarative statements, and instead, express your thoughts by explaining your viewpoint of the situation or circumstance. It is important to differentiate between your opinion and the facts.
  4. Don't take your frustration out on your spouse. From time to time, everyone has a bad day. Recognize the reason why you feel angry and control your emotion instead of redirecting it.
  5. Don't underestimate the importance of intimacy. Both inside and outside of the bedroom, it is important to preserve a close relationship with your spouse. From actively listening and maintaining eye contact during conversations to physical touch, establish and continually reestablish rapport and affection in your marriage.

When the flame in your marriage wavers, divorce is not always the answer. Sometimes your fire simply needs tending. Happy Valentine's Day from Hoppes & Cutrer!
